YOMI International

Kutani Porcelain Urns Head to the U.S.: Japan's Maruei Makes Its First Appearance at the 2026 NFDA International Convention & Expo
Twelve designs from the Kutani Memorial Urn Collection on display at Booth 427 in Charlotte, as the Ishikawa-based company seeks long-term U.S. distribution partners

YOMI International Inc. (Tokyo, Japan; CEO Masumi Murata) announces that Maruei Co., Ltd. (Nomi, Ishikawa, Japan; President and CEO Hirotaka Mizukami) will exhibit for the first time at the 2026 NFDA International Convention & Expo, held October 25-28, 2026, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Maruei will present its Kutani Memorial Urn Collection, made from Kutani porcelain, as it enters the U.S. market. YOMI International has supported the project from planning through on-site interpretation.
A traditional Japanese craft for American memorialization
Kutani ware is Ishikawa Prefecture's signature overglaze porcelain, with roots tracing back to around 1655. It is known for vivid overglaze decoration, bold compositions, and a tradition of five characteristic colors: green, yellow, purple, deep blue, and red.
Maruei, a wholesaler and manufacturer of funeral and end-of-life products, has long supplied Kutani porcelain urns and incense burners in Japan. Charlotte marks the company's first international trade show.
A vessel to keep close, as cremation becomes the norm
Cremation is now the most common choice in the United States, and families are asking how to keep, place, and honor the remains of those they love. Maruei offers the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship as one answer, under the concept "Japanese Memorial Art."
Twelve designs in four sizes
The collection features 12 designs inspired by cherry blossoms, Mount Fuji, peonies, and the sea, including Kirameki, Yūbi, Sōkai, Sakura Ginsai, and Tenmoku Sakura Fuji. Four sizes range from a 2.5-sun keepsake urn to a 7-sun large adult urn. The booth will focus on the 5-sun and 2.5-sun sizes.
Looking for U.S. partners
At the show, Maruei will meet U.S. distributors and multi-location funeral homes with the goal of building long-term partnerships. YOMI International CEO Masumi Murata will accompany the team in Charlotte as interpreter and coordinator.
Comment from Hirotaka Mizukami, President and CEO, Maruei Co., Ltd.
"We want to share the beauty of Kutani ware, a craft handed down for generations in Ishikawa, with families in the United States as a new way to remember the people they love. We hope its rich colors and designs will bring to mind a loved one's favorite colors, flowers, and personality.
This challenge is also about creating work that sustains our local industry. By listening to American funeral homes and families, reflecting their voices in our products, and building long-term, trusted partnerships, we hope to pass our artisans' skills on to the next generation and inspire young people to want to carry on this craft. This first exhibition is our first step."
Comment from Masumi Murata, CEO, YOMI International Inc.
I have worked in the funeral industry for 20 years and visit the U.S. funeral market every year. I have seen major changes, including a rapid rise in cremation. The U.S. market is more diverse than Japan's, and I believe it is ready to welcome Japanese crafts with fresh designs. Together with Maruei, we are going to Charlotte to listen, so that Kutani urns can become vessels that help American families feel close to the people they love."
